I’ve been reflecting on how I personally define and describe strength. It’s been interesting to notice how many ideas about strength show up in the media and in yoga circles, and to ask myself if those ideas work for me. I’ve also found it disturbing to listen to the media’s portrayal of “strength”, especially in our business and political discourse.
As I question these various narratives of strength, I start to ask these questions:
When do I feel strong? What am I doing? Who am I with? Where do I feel strength in my body? my mind? my heart?
What stories of strength feel closest to my experience? What stories of strength help me when I am challenged? What stories of strength align with my values?
What is the source of my strength? Do I have more than one source of strength? What reduces my strength?
When is strength loud and obvious? When is strength quiet and subtle? Are they both needed at different times?
Am I biased toward a particular story of strength in myself? In others?
In this series of four weekly yoga classes, we will explore these questions and inquire into the nature of strength as it grows in our bodies and yoga practice. Practices will be appropriate for all levels, and you are encouraged to explore what works for you.
